How to calculate your Destiny Matrix chart by hand

Please read this first: The Destiny Matrix is a symbolic self-reflection tool, not a prediction. Nothing here is medical, financial, or relationship advice, and no result can tell you what will happen or what you should do. Use it to think, not to decide for you.

You want to know how the numbers on a Destiny Matrix chart are actually produced, not just take a calculator’s word for it. Good instinct. The method is simple addition plus one reduction rule, and once you have done it twice you will never be mystified by a chart again. Grab a pen, write your birth date down, and follow the steps below. You will end up with nine points, labelled A through I, each holding a number from 1 to 22.

First, the one rule you need. It is called reduce22. While a number is over 22, replace it by the sum of its decimal digits. If that sum gives 0, use 22 instead. So 30 becomes 3 plus 0, which is 3. The number 25 becomes 2 plus 5, which is 7. The number 44 becomes 4 plus 4, which is 8. You only keep reducing while the result is over 22, and you stop as soon as you land from 1 to 22. Keep that rule in your head and the rest is straightforward adding.

Now the points, in order. Point A is your day of birth. If your day is 22 or less, use it as it stands. If your day is over 22, add its digits together. That gives you the day examples people often trip over: 28 becomes 2 plus 8, which is 10. The date 29 becomes 2 plus 9, which is 11. The date 30 becomes 3 plus 0, which is 3. The date 31 becomes 3 plus 1, which is 4. So a person born on the 28th has A equal to 10, not 28, and a person born on the 31st has A equal to 4.

Point B is your month, from 1 to 12, used exactly as it stands. January is 1, June is 6, December is 12. There is no reduction here, because no month is over 22. Point C is your year. Add the digits of the year together, then apply reduce22 to the result. Two examples make this clear. The year 1990 gives 1 plus 9 plus 9 plus 0, which is 19, and 19 is already within range, so C is 19. The year 1987 gives 1 plus 9 plus 8 plus 7, which is 25, and 25 is over 22, so you add 2 plus 5 to get 7, so C is 7. That second step is the one people most often forget, so check it twice.

Point D comes from adding your first three points: D is reduce22 of A plus B plus C. Point E, the centre of the chart, comes from adding all four: E is reduce22 of A plus B plus C plus D. Those two points do most of the work in a reading, because D gathers your day, month and year into one figure, and E gathers the whole chart into its middle.

Then come the turned-square points, F, G, H and I. These are formed from neighbouring corner points, going around the chart. F is reduce22 of A plus B. G is reduce22 of B plus C. H is reduce22 of C plus D. I is reduce22 of D plus A. Each one is reduced the same way, so each one lands from 1 to 22. Schools name positions differently, and other charts may label these spots with other letters or add extra lines around them. This chart uses the geometric definition given here, so every point can be checked by hand from the additions above, with no hidden step.

Let us work Example 1 in full. The birth date is 07/01/1987. Step one: A is the day, 7, which is already within range, so A is 7. Step two: B is the month, January, so B is 1. Step three: C is the year. Add 1 plus 9 plus 8 plus 7 to get 25, then reduce 25 by adding 2 plus 5 to get 7, so C is 7. Step four: D is reduce22 of 7 plus 1 plus 7. That sum is 15, which is within range, so D is 15. Step five: E is reduce22 of 7 plus 1 plus 7 plus 15. That sum is 30, and 3 plus 0 is 3, so E is 3. Step six: F is reduce22 of 7 plus 1, which is 8. Step seven: G is reduce22 of 1 plus 7, which is 8. Step eight: H is reduce22 of 7 plus 15, which is 22. Step nine: I is reduce22 of 15 plus 7, which is 22. So Example 1 gives A 7, B 1, C 7, D 15, E 3, F 8, G 8, H 22, I 22.

Now Example 2, a different date, so you can see the reductions working harder. The birth date is 15/06/1990. Step one: A is the day, 15, so A is 15. Step two: B is the month, June, so B is 6. Step three: C is the year. Add 1 plus 9 plus 9 plus 0 to get 19, which is within range, so C is 19. Step four: D is reduce22 of 15 plus 6 plus 19. That sum is 40, and 4 plus 0 is 4, so D is 4. Step five: E is reduce22 of 15 plus 6 plus 19 plus 4. That sum is 44, and 4 plus 4 is 8, so E is 8. Step six: F is reduce22 of 15 plus 6, which is 21. Step seven: G is reduce22 of 6 plus 19. That sum is 25, and 2 plus 5 is 7, so G is 7. Step eight: H is reduce22 of 19 plus 4. That sum is 23, and 2 plus 3 is 5, so H is 5. Step nine: I is reduce22 of 4 plus 15, which is 19. So Example 2 gives A 15, B 6, C 19, D 4, E 8, F 21, G 7, H 5, I 19.

Once you have the nine numbers, match each one to its arcana name. The list runs 1 Magician, 2 High Priestess, 3 Empress, 4 Emperor, 5 Hierophant, 6 Lovers, 7 Chariot, 8 Justice, 9 Hermit, 10 Wheel of Fortune, 11 Strength, 12 Hanged Man, 13 Death, 14 Temperance, 15 Devil, 16 Tower, 17 Star, 18 Moon, 19 Sun, 20 Judgement, 21 World, 22 Fool. Watch two pairs people often swap: energy 8 is Justice and energy 11 is Strength, not the other way round. Also note that the Fool is 0 in some tarot decks and 22 here, so a 22 on this chart is the Fool, not a missing number.

Now check your own hand calculation against the calculator:

Your date is processed in your browser only. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

If your hand result and the calculator result differ, walk back through the steps in order. Most errors come from three places: forgetting to reduce a day over 22, forgetting the second reduction for a year like 1987, or adding D into E incorrectly. Fix one step at a time and the rest usually falls into place. When the two match, you know you understand the chart, and reading it becomes much easier.

Questions people ask

What does reduce22 mean in plain language?

It means keep adding the digits of a number until it lands from 1 to 22. If a sum is over 22, you add its digits together, and you repeat that only while the result stays over 22. If a digit sum gives 0, you use 22 instead.

Why is the 28th reduced to 10 and the 31st to 4?

Because the day point must land from 1 to 22, so a day over 22 is reduced by adding its digits. The date 28 gives 2 plus 8, which is 10, and the date 31 gives 3 plus 1, which is 4. The same rule gives 29 as 11 and 30 as 3.

Why does 1987 give 7 but 1990 gives 19?

Both years start by adding their digits. The year 1990 gives 19, which is already within range, so it stays 19. The year 1987 gives 25, which is over 22, so you add 2 plus 5 to get 7. That second reduction is the difference.

What are the turned-square points F, G, H and I?

They are the four points of the turned square inside the chart, formed from neighbouring corners. F adds A and B, G adds B and C, H adds C and D, and I adds D and A, each reduced to the 1 to 22 range.

Is energy 8 Justice or Strength?

Energy 8 is Justice and energy 11 is Strength in this system. Some tarot decks swap those two cards, which is why the mix-up is common, but this site follows the list above consistently, so check 8 as Justice every time.

What should I do if my hand calculation disagrees with the calculator?

Recheck the day reduction, the year reduction, and the D and E additions first, since most slips happen there. Work one step at a time and compare each intermediate sum. If the steps match and the final numbers match, you have the right chart.
